WAITIN’ FOR GRADUATION
It was ’59 and the time
For graduation grew near.
Some hearts afire full with desire
And some were quaking with fear.
Tests are done and everyone
Had one thing they hoped to hear,
That – the gain of their name
On the engraved diploma dear.
Now Ray Ayres was there
And knew full well he had it made,
And Kolessar had with her
A four-leaf clover’s green shade.
While Dave Frees, if you please,
Was calm and awfully unafraid,
But that “mon’, big Phil Hahn
Found his appetite mislaid.
Don’t think wrong, but Johnny Long
Was as serene as he could be.
On Fillman’s part, both Bets and Bart,
Were brazen, if somewhat shakenly.
Our Miss Kitty, was feeling pity
For Debbie, who was acting nervously,
And Gloria Annette, no teacher’s pet,
Was taking every joke hysterically.
Greg and Galen, no fear of failin’,
For they were in the upper echelon,
But Judy Keeley felt unwieldy,
For the final week was a cram-a-thon.
A stoic bison was Buddy Tyson,
No more would he be a teacher’s pick-on.
Both silent Robbie and noisy Bobby,
At different ends of the line, soon gone.
In this fix, one hundred six.
Some calm, some glad, and with tear.
Too many again for me to name,
But all waited for the day that grew near.
Upon that night sparks flew bright,
All sang the class song crystal clear,
And then the page upon the stage
And one hundred and six diploma’s dear.
