Duty Bound

Is it I, the drums do call?
Is that a trumpet sound?
Farewell to you, my love,
For I am duty bound.

Thus I go. Must I go?
My heart does beat and pound.
Yes, I must go, my love,
For I am duty bound.

Someday soon I will return,
Keep hope wrapped warm around,
But goodbye, I must go,
For I am duty bound.

It seems years since I left home:
Who lies beneath this mound
Upon my return, my love,
From being duty bound?

Yes, who lies here?             It is I,
Returned to my hometown.
They took me up the hill
To the burial ground.

It was I the drums did call.
It was my trumpet sound.
Farewell to you, my love,
For I was duty bound.
